Being hungry means more than just missing a meal. It’s a debilitating crisis affecting one in eight of the world's population - many of these being children suffering chronic hunger and malnutrition.

On the 16th of October each year we celebrate World Food Day and support the campaign dedicated to tackling global hunger. The statistics are alarming, and with pause for thought it is hard to comprehend that across the world around 9 million people die of hunger and hunger-related diseases every year.

World Hunger can feel like one of those insurmountable problems and leave one wondering “How can I really make any difference?”

To some level there is a limit to the contribution the consumer can play, with much of the action required at higher levels.

But that doesn’t mean the collection contribution of your and other individuals is fruitless. There are in fact many changes you can make today in your own home to join the fight indifference and end World Hunger.


What can I do to stop world hunger?


The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization any solutions to world hunger must start with a massive reduction of food waste. And your actions on an individual level from way you purchase, prepare and consume food will impact the larger frame of things when it comes to food waste and loss. Here are 8 things you can change today:


  1. Buy only what you are going to eat. If you find your fresh foods are ageing, cook them first to avoid wastage. You can also share with neighbours and friends if you find you have a surplus.
  2. Buy the ugly fruit! The tomato that isn’t perfectly symmetrical or fruit with a few extra dimples. It’s a hard habit to break as we are often in the habit of picking out the produce that meets our preconceived notion of acceptable food appearance. But because of this farmers are often forced to throw these deformed items, as many grocery shops won’t buy them for fear that they are unsellable. There are many benefits to changing this habit – and it’s that reason why ugly is now trending in the grocery aisles.
  3. Join initiatives to raise awareness and fight world hunger such as the World Food Programme (#stopthewaste).
  4. Look for a food bank or place to donate excess food which can be managed, esp. in the case that your work in a hotel or restaurant.
  5. Electronic waste has become one of the biggest pollution problems in our soil. Discarding of batteries, old devices and electronic waste has an impact on our environment and in turn agriculture and farming. Recycle these, donate them or dispose of them responsibly.
  6. Lower your meat intake. Meat production is a wasteful, particularly in beef farming, where just 2.5% of the feed given to cattle emerges as calories for our consumption.
  7. Make a donation to one of the many international organisations fighting world hunger such as Action Against Hunger, Heifer International or to a local South African initiative like Rise against Hunger and The Hunger Project.
  8. For those of us who don’t have the money to donate to charity, online fundraising games like are the perfect way to do your part.
