Specifying Sanitaryware for Public Bathrooms in Shopping Malls
When specifying for public ablutions in shopping centres, architects are primarily looking for high-quality materials that will be easy to maintain in heavily used washrooms.
What are designers and architects looking for when specifiying for shopping center ablutions?
Stainless Steel is often the first choice for public and semi-public washrooms due to is robust and hygienic properties, which makes it a very durable economical over the lifetime of a building.
The subject of water saving has become an increasingly important focus in shopping mall bathrooms too. WC Pans can consume up to 90% of water usage in a commercial building and so clients will often look for a WC Pan that offers low water consumption. Franke WC Pans have been designed to reduce water consumption by 60% (4 litres vs. the standard 11 litres per flush). Products like self-closing taps also play a fundamental role in water saving as do waterless urinals - which don’t require frequent flushing and therefore reduce water use and expense.
Another change we have seen over the years is the inclusion of high-end surfaces. Countertop materials like stone, quartz and solid surface are gaining popularity for commercial washrooms. Despite being a little more expensive than traditional products, developers are happy to use these countertops that have nonporous properties, helping them stay cleaner and germ-free longer. The slightly higher initial investment ultimately saves the owner over time on maintenance and also much more hygienic for the patrons using the facility.

When working with an architect, Renatta Govender, Business Development Manager for KZN most commonly recommends the Franke Stratos Designer Range of Accessories for high end Shopping Centre Ablutions. This range is a popular choice with its unique arched design and sophisticated look. As important, the Stratos range has InoxPlus Technology – a nanotechnology process surface treatment which visibly reduces fingerprints and makes these accessories exceptionally maintenance friendly – something very important to the developer of a Mall.
Vandalism and theft are often big factors to consider in public ablutions and so architects may choose stainless steel products which are very robust and therefor vandal resistant. The Stratos range of accessories is manufactured from high grade 1.5mm gauge stainless steel making them particularly resistant to damage or denting. For security reasons, Franke stainless steel mirrors are also good choice vs typical glass mirrors which are easy to break.
Complementing our accessories, our self-closing pillar taps are a great choice for the public ablution in a Shopping Centre – designed to improve hygiene and decrease water consumption. In a choice of designs these taps offer a much more modern design than similar taps in their price range, and have a reputation for the highest of quality in the inner working mechanisms.
Another important range of products to include are Grab Rails for the Disabled Toilets.
With Franke South Africa introducing Worktops to their product offering in 2017, they are now able to offer a turnkey solution for a public washroom. The first shopping centre ablutions fitted with Franke Quartz worktops was recently completed on the 28th September 2018.

At the mall opening project developer Vivian Reddy commented: “There was not a negative word spoken about the architecture and design of the mall and many regarded it as high end. Another positive was how well our toilets were received. We spent much on quality finishes. Often developers short-change communities on projects in smaller towns”.
