Many of us automatically assume that our water is safe to drink straight out of the tap. But is this assumption correct?

How Safe Is Our Drinking Water?

With South Africa’s crumbling water infrastructure and poor Municipality maintenance, we think it’s best to err on the side of caution. When it comes to the safety of your drinking water, it’s wise to take every step possible to filter out any potential hazards to your health.

To prevent us from drinking unsanitary water and getting ill, water service providers like Rand Water, pump a cocktail of chemicals into our drinking water so that any harmful bacteria found in it is killed. The problem with this, however, lies in the types and amounts of chemicals added to the water. Although the water we drink has no immediate effect on our health, it is the long-term impact that is concerning.

Not only does long-term exposure to chemicals present health risks, but harmful micro-organisms can also make their way through to our drinking water when systems are not maintained.

What’s In Our Drinking Water?

According to epidemiologist Thomas Chalmers, the drinking of chlorinated water, over long periods, can increase your risk of cancer by up to 20% or more (depending on the type). Cancers affecting the colon, bladder and breasts have been associated with long-term exposure to chlorinated drinking water.

A low concentration of lead, from natural sources, can be found in our drinking water, but this presents little risk to our health. Concern is raised, however, when Municipalities avoid the cost of replacing old and deteriorating lead pipes. The lead from these deteriorating pipes can dissolve into our drinking water and present risks to our health over time.

Prolonged exposure to lead can cause learning disorders in children, as well as developmental delays, and is especially harmful to pregnant mothers.

Giardia and Cryptosporidium

These protozoa are often the culprits when it comes to outbreaks of gastro-intestinal diseases. Because of the small size of these micro-organisms and their resistance to certain chemicals, they are often difficult to get rid of. These harmful organisms are more likely to be present in poorly maintained water systems.

With all the risks involved in long-term exposure to the above mentioned chemicals and micro-organisms, it’s a wonder that we trustingly drink water directly from the tap. Thankfully, all it takes to purify your drinking water and make it less hazardous to your health is a quality filtration system.

If you’re the kind of person that wants to take every precaution possible to eliminate health risks, its best you go with a mixer that has built-in sub-micron filtration. Like a Franke Neptune Filterflow mixer or a Zip Hydro Tap. The filters on these mixers remove micro-organisms and any harmful impurities such as dirt, rust and chlorine, making your drinking water pure instantly.
